Calculate shift hours after breaks

Worked time = elapsed time − unpaid break time

First find the time between the start and end. If the end is earlier than the start, add the time remaining until midnight and the time after midnight. Then subtract unpaid breaks.

Day shift

9:00 AM–5:00 PM is 8 elapsed hours. Subtract a 30-minute break: 7h 30m (7.50 hours).

Overnight shift

10:00 PM–6:30 AM is 8h 30m. Subtract a 30-minute break: 8h 00m (8.00 hours).

12-hour span

6:00 AM–6:00 PM is 12 elapsed hours. Subtract a one-hour break: 11h 00m (11.00 hours).

Are paid breaks subtracted?

Enter only unpaid break minutes. If a break counts toward your paid hours, leave it in the worked total.

What are the limits of this calculator?

It uses clock times for a span of less than 24 hours. Equal start and end times mean zero elapsed time, not a full day. It does not account for dates, time zones or daylight-saving clock changes. For several shifts, use the weekly time card.
