How to convert hours and minutes to decimal hours
Decimal hours = whole hours + (minutes ÷ 60)
For 7 hours 30 minutes: 7 + (30 ÷ 60) = 7.50 hours. For 8 hours 15 minutes: 8 + (15 ÷ 60) = 8.25 hours.
Why is 7 hours 30 minutes not 7.30 hours?
A clock hour contains 60 minutes. A decimal fraction divides an hour into hundredths. 0.30 hours is 18 minutes, so entering 7.30 into a decimal-hours system represents 7 hours 18 minutes.
Common conversions
Convert decimal hours back to hours and minutes
Keep the whole hours, then multiply the fractional part by 60. For 7.75 hours, 0.75 × 60 = 45, giving 7 hours 45 minutes. The reverse calculator rounds to the nearest minute.
Rounding and unpaid breaks
The decimal result is displayed to two decimal places. For example, 20 minutes is 0.333… hours, displayed as 0.33. For a timesheet, total the original minutes and subtract unpaid breaks before rounding the final decimal total. Follow the precision required by your payroll or invoicing system.
